October’s Object: Parachute Bike

At first glance, this folding bicycle might look unremarkable, but it played a remarkable role during the Second World War. More than 70,000 Parachute Bikes were produced, specially designed to be dropped from aircraft by parachute, transported in gliders, or carried by paratroopers behind enemy lines.

Find the Parachute Bike in our Newark gallery.
