Inspiring generations of artists

For centuries, Newark Castle has stood watch over the River Trent, witnessing battles, celebrations, change, and everyday life.

Its familiar silhouette has inspired generations of artists, photographers, and visitors, each capturing the castle in their own unique way.

This exhibition brings together paintings, drawings, prints, and photographs of Newark Castle from across the years.

It reveals how both the landmark and the people who depict it have changed over time.

Dramatic ruins and a fascinating medieval history

Some artists focused on the castle's dramatic ruins and medieval history. Others were drawn to its place at the heart of Newark's daily life.

Their works reflect changing artistic styles, technologies, and perspectives, offering new ways of seeing a place many of us know so well.

From romantic Victorian landscapes to contemporary photography, the exhibition explores how Newark Castle has remained a constant presence while continually taking on new meanings for different generations.

Together, these artworks tell the story not only of a historic building, but of a living landmark that continues to shape Newark's identity today.
